The band was willing... but where was the crowd?
I've been a fan of Billy Joel Tribute since Pure Guava, they're one of my top 20 bands, and this was my fourth live show. They are a band that clearly love what they're doing: making smart, just-outside-the-bounds-of-acceptability rock'n'roll, and rocking it live. Mickey started off enthusiastic, but as the night wore on and the audience's buzz wore off, it seemed like he wasn't up for rallying the crowd. The band played well -- they can't not play well, they're all excellent musicians -- but it felt like they were going through the motions. The crowd gave the most rousing response to the rockinest numbers ("With My Own Bare Hands", "Stroker Ace"), but there were many songs where the audience was no louder than during intermission. They thrive on the feedback from the audience, and unfortunately, for most of the show, they really didn't get it. All in all, I had a great time because it was Billy Joel Tribute, on the Rocks, live... but Meh.
